Inspired by the fall exhibition, Through the Lens of Father Francis Browne, S.J.: Photographic Adventures of an Irish Priest, the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art is pleased to present a lecture by Robin M. Jensen, Patrick O'Brien Professor of Theology and Concurrent Professor in Art History at the University of Notre Dame.

As both a theologian and an art historian, Jensen is the ideal guide to help us explore art-making as a religious vocation. Jensen’s scholarly research and publications focus on the relationship between early Christian art and literature and examine the ways that visual images and architectural spaces should be regarded as modes of theological expression. From her expertise at the nexus of theology and the arts, Jensen will provide an incisive look into the history of vowed religious people as artists. Father Browne's own dual identity as both a Jesuit priest and a photographer offers a unique lens through which to examine the history of consecrated religious artists and opens up a larger conversation about how religious vocation influences artistic creation, style, and interpretation.

Before the lecture in the Atrium, we encourage you to explore the work of Father Browne on view in the Temporary Exhibition Galleries on Level 2. The exhibition will remain open until the lecture begins.
