Ariel (Halle Bailey) is a mermaid who lives fathoms below in a sea kingdom overlooked by her father, King Triton (Javier Bardem). Despite her social and material capital, her awareness of what's on the surface, and the perceived freedom that provides, pushes her to be part of a different world. Her ticket to land comes via a Faustian bargain with Ursula, a sea witch and proponent of body language. Ariel will need a classic deal satisfier-a true love's kiss-to regain her voice and find a happy ending.
