Nathan Harris (MFA, Michener Center at the University of Texas) took the literary world by storm with his 2021 debut novel, The Sweetness of Water, an instant New York Times bestseller chosen for Oprah’s Book Club and Barack Obama’s Summer Reading List. His new novel Amity, also set in the critical post-Civil War years, was named one of Amazon Editors’ Best Books of 2025. Join Harris for a wide-ranging conversation with Professors Dionne Irving Bremyer (English and Creative Writing) and Greg Laski (American Studies), about the craft of historical fiction, literature as vehicle for citizenship, and the state of the contemporary US novel, as well as an audience Q&A. All are welcome!

This event is co-sponsored by: Department of Africana Studies; Department of English and the Creative Writing Program; Initiative on Race and Resilience; The Franco Family Institute for Liberal Arts and the Public Good, College of Arts and Letters; Office of Undergraduate Studies, College of Arts and Letters.
