Starting with the building blocks of Jumanji, A Minecraft Movie spins another entry into the growing world of successful films based on video game IP. A huge hit, it smartly follows the tricky dual path of serving Easter eggs to satiate fans of the franchise while also entertaining the uninitiated. Game for both leaning into and out of his persona, Jason Momoa plays a down-on-his-luck gaming champion who, together with a ragtag crew, is sucked into the world of Minecraft, where they meet Steve (Jack Black), who gives them the tools, know-how, and confidence to survive an evil queen and return home.
